Picking the perfect wedding photographer is a huge decision, but it can be a little overwhelming too! You want someone who gets your vibe and can capture your special day just right. While you may have a list of common questions ready, we’ve got a few not-so-obvious ones that can really help you make the best choice. Let’s dive into the questions that can give you peace of mind before booking!
1. Will you be our photographer on our wedding day?
It’s important to confirm that the person you’re meeting with will actually be the one shooting your wedding. Some photography studios have multiple photographers, and you want to know exactly who will be capturing your big day! Keep in mind that some photography studios have some amazing teams so don’t be discouraged by companies that does this (we do not do this ourselves), however there are some bad apples out there that underpay photographers and hire them last minute so just be careful!
2. What will you wear on our wedding day?
Your photographer will be front and center, so their attire matters! If you’re having a formal wedding, you’ll want them to dress the part. Make sure to ask about their outfit choices to keep everything in line with your wedding style. A large majority of the time photographers will dress professionally, especially if their price point is at your states average or higher. But we have seen some real interesting things in the past. If you have a required dress code for your wedding, be sure to let your photographer know.
3. Do you have an assistant and/or second (associate) shooter?
Having a second shooter can be super helpful, especially during large weddings. They can capture different angles and moments that might slip by with just one photographer. Most photographers have the option to add a second shooter to any package. Other photographers may by default bring an assistant to help them with the nitty gritty so they can focus on your wedding day 100%.
4. What happens if you become ill or have an emergency on our wedding day?
Life happens! It’s smart to know what the backup plan is if your photographer can’t make it. A reliable photographer should have a contingency plan in place, whether it’s another photographer from their team or a trusted friend.
5. How long after the wedding will we have to wait to see any photos?
We all love the anticipation of waiting for those beautiful wedding photos! However, timelines can vary. Ask your photographer how long it typically takes to receive the sneak peek and the full gallery after the wedding day.
6. Do you have any backup equipment?
Good equipment can fail, so it’s crucial for your photographer to have backup gear. Ask if they bring extra cameras, lenses, and memory cards to ensure they’re prepared for anything! (We bring 5, cameras, 5 lenses, and like 100 SD cards 😅)
7. What is your attitude normally like on a wedding day?
Your photographer will be part of your day, so it’s essential to know how they approach it. Are they upbeat and energetic, or more laid-back and chill? Understanding their personality helps ensure you vibe well together. It’s always important to find a photographer that fits your vibe to make you the most comfortable.
8. How many weddings/events do you typically photograph in one weekend?
Some photographers might shoot multiple weddings in a single weekend. While it’s not necessarily a bad thing, it never hurts to ask! This can also help you gauge how many weddings will come before yours which can set back editing times a bit.
9. Do you allow other people (guests) to take photos while you are?
This can be a tricky topic! Some photographers prefer to have control over the shots and discourage guest photography, while others are more relaxed. Make sure to discuss this so everyone is on the same page. As long as a secondary photographer was not physically hired and guests do not obstruct the main photographer, its usually not a huge issue.
10. Is there any additional equipment that you set up during a wedding?
Many photographers bring additional gear like lighting or even a drone for aerial shots. Knowing what to expect helps you prepare for the setup and ensure your venue can accommodate any extra equipment. Of course your photographer will usually help you plan this into your timeline to make sure they have time!
11. Do you have any meal requirements on the wedding day?
Most photographers appreciate a meal during long wedding days, so it’s courteous to ask about any dietary restrictions they may have. This helps you plan accordingly and keeps everyone happy! After all, you’re feeding all of your guests, why not your photo team too?
12. What is your favorite part of a wedding day?
This question can reveal their passion and the moments they look forward to capturing. Their answer might give you insight into what they prioritize during your wedding.
13. How do you handle group photos and family portraits?
Group shots can be a bit chaotic! Knowing how your photographer organizes and directs these photos can help things run smoothly on the day.
14. Can we provide a shot list of must-have photos?
If there are specific moments or groupings you want captured, it’s good to discuss this upfront. This way, everyone knows what’s expected and nothing gets missed!
15. Will you be posting about our wedding on your website or social media?
If you’re not comfortable with your wedding photos being shared publicly, it’s essential to have this conversation. You can discuss any restrictions or preferences you have. Most photographers have a default clause in their contract to use all work as portfolio online and if you want to be completely private, there may be an additional fee for some photographers. After all, this is how photographers get more clients and show off their work.
16. Do you have liability insurance?
It’s crucial for any professional to have liability insurance. This protects you and them in case of unexpected situations on your wedding day.
17. How many years have you been shooting weddings?
Experience can make a big difference! Knowing how long your photographer has been in the industry can give you confidence in their skills.
18. Can we see a full gallery from a recent wedding?
While portfolios usually showcase the best work, seeing a complete gallery gives you a better idea of what to expect for your wedding.
19. What happens if we need to reschedule our wedding?
Life can be unpredictable, and knowing how your photographer handles rescheduling can help you feel more at ease.
20. How will you communicate with us during the planning process?
Effective communication is key! Understanding how often you’ll hear from your photographer and through what channels (email, phone, etc.) can help keep everything on track.
21. What editing style do you use for your photos?
Editing can significantly impact the final look of your photos. Ask your photographer about their editing process to ensure it aligns with your vision.
22. Do you have experience working at our venue?
This is not a deal breaker nor usually an issue for most experienced photographers, but for those newer in the industry this can make their job a little harder. Having been to a venue generally does not affect the speed, process, or how the day runs, but it never hurts to have seen the venue in person.
23. How do you approach capturing candid moments?
Candid shots can bring your wedding album to life. Understanding your photographer’s approach to capturing spontaneous moments can help you get a sense of their style.
24. Can we customize our package?
Every wedding is unique! Knowing if your photographer offers package customization can help you tailor their services to fit your needs.
25. What is your backup plan for bad weather?
Weather can be unpredictable on your big day. Ask your photographer how they handle unforeseen circumstances like rain or snow to ensure you’re prepared.
In closing…
Asking these questions can really help you find a wedding photographer who fits your style and meets your needs. Remember, your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and having the right photographer is key to capturing those memories!
